Ngaio Marsh originally submitted this work for exhibition in the Canterbury Society of Arts 1935 Annual Exhibition under the title of Still Life but was advised that it was not a still life! She then changed the name to In the Quarry. The work was subsequently exhibited as Relief Workers.
